Three-Step Process to solve problems: Scan, Solve, Rescan;
• Scan: read the expression left-to-right to identify the highest priority operation.
• Solve: this singular expression, creating a new expression.
• Rescan: the newly created expression, can be solved.
** Remember: multiplication outside of brackets (parentheses) does not get priority over division elsewhere. **
Example:
8+3×4=
Incorrect: 8+3×4=44 (8+3=11, 11×4=44.)
Correct: 8+3×4=20 (3×4 is the priority, the new expression becomes 8+12).
High School Level Foundational Tier Questions (Non Calculator)
1. 4+5×3-2=
2. (8-3)×2+10÷2=
3. 20÷4+3×(5-2)=
