The Human Brain
The human brain, a remarkably complex and energy-efficient organ, serves as the central command centre of the nervous system. Composed of approximately 86 billion neurons that form trillions of synaptic connections, it is fundamentally divided into three primary regions: the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem.
The cerebrum with its highly convoluted cerebral cortex, is responsible for higher-order functions such as conscious thought, reasoning, memory, and sensory processing, while the cerebellum coordinates movement and balance, and the brainstem regulates vital autonomic functions. Its intricate architecture features specialized lobes; frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital, each managing distinct cognitive and perceptual tasks. Through a combination of electrical impulses and chemical signalling, the brain not only gives rise to consciousness, emotion, and the unique human capacity for learning, adaptation, and abstract thought.

High School Level Foundational Tier GCSE Questions
(note your answers, and see if you are correct by looking it up, or asking someone for the solutions).
1. The brain is divided into different areas, each with a special job. What is the main role of the frontal lobe, and, can you give an example of something you would not be able to do as well if this part of your brain was injured?
2. When you touch a hot pan, your brain tells your hand to pull away almost instantly. What are the basic cells in your brain and nervous system that send these "pull away!" messages, and what is the name of the tiny gap between these cells where the message has to jump across?
3. The brain is a delicate organ. What are the two main physical structures (one bony and one membrane-based) that protect it from injury?
